Background: The psychological benefits of sports activities (SA) on adolescents are well-documented, yet nuanced differences between individual and team sports participation still need to be explored. Purpose: This study examines the associations between participation in individual and team SA and indicators of mental well-being among adolescents concerning gender and grade. Methods: Analysing data from a 2017 (n=716, 46.7% girls), 2019 (n=875, 51.4% girls), 2021 (n=888, 49.2% girls), and 2023 (n=839, 46.8% girls), sample of adolescents across 5th, 7th, and 9th grades, we assessed sports participation frequency (at least twice a week) and its association with life satisfaction (LS), the WHO-5 Well-being Index (WHO5), and self-rated health (SRH). The association of sports participation with LS, WHO5 and SRH was evaluated using t-tests and chi-square tests to identify disparities in well-being by sports type, gender, and grade. Results: Participation in adolescent sports generally protects against adverse mental health outcomes across all grades, genders and all survey rounds. Children participating in team sports reported significantly higher scores in LS, WHO5, and SRH, with team sports showing a more pronounced positive impact than individual sports. Although participation in sports decreases with age, this pattern persists across all age groups. Gender disparities were evident, with boys showing greater participation in sports activities and better well-being outcomes than girls. Conclusions: Our findings underscore the importance of sports participation in promoting mental well-being among children, with team sports offering particular benefits. However, the gender gap in sports participation and well-being highlights the need for targeted interventions to encourage inclusive and equitable sports engagement. Practical Implications: Interventions to enhance mental well-being through sports should consider the unique benefits of team sports and address gender and age disparities to ensure all children have the opportunity to participate in and benefit from sports activities.
